It’s dark, the only light in the lounge at 221B Baker Street is the orange glow of street lamps. Lying on the sofa, Sherlock considers, once again, that what he wants is John.

John, who’s steadfast and true, believes unreservedly in Queen and Country and is a bloody excellent shot. He’s not sure if he wants sex, but he does want something beyond the level of friendship they currently have. But he’s going to have to work up the courage to actually tell him all of that.

In the meantime, though, Sherlock once again rises from the sofa and grabs the Union flag cushion from its usual place, John’s armchair. Retaking his place on the couch, he holds the cushion like he once held his teddy bear, like he would hold John, if allowed to do so.

In the meantime, this representation of John, of Britain and Empire, and being a bloody excellent shot will do. Comforted by an inanimate object, Sherlock presses a quick kiss against the fabric, and actually goes to sleep.

The following morning, when John once again finds him like this, he’ll just smile gently, say nothing, go to the kitchen and put the kettle on.
