The Husband’s Game

She’s watching the little purple butterfly-like aliens kiss, and, yes, it’s very sweet, but Gwen still doesn’t quite understand what’s just happened.
“Hide and seek? Across the bloody Rift, Jack?” she asks, high-pitched, turning to look up at him.
“Yeah,” he says, big, happy grin on his face. “Tradition for Papilonian newly-weds, like our flying friends here. The guy has to find the girl, and a Rift has to be used. Which means they sometimes show up here. Beautiful, huh?”
Gwen nods, vaguely; Jack puts his arm around her shoulders, and they watch the Papilonians for a little while longer.
