The Better Part of Valour
by Laura
Jack’s making an exception to his normal rules, so they’ve drunk all the decent wine in Valentino’s house, between the two of them, and they’re now on the grappa. Making an agreement, a kind of business deal while drunk isn’t usually the best idea, but that’s exactly what Jack’s planning to do. Although he thinks he’ll easily get him on his side, he does want the man pliant, just in case.
Because the very last thing he wants for his people, his beautiful, strange people of Tempus Fugit, who earn a living with their bodies, is to see any of them hurt, in any way whatsoever. Well, not unless they’ve done it themselves, purposely, in the course of their work. He needs someone who can be discreet, and this handsome, greying Italian gentleman, this tailor, Signore Rosso, certainly seems to fit the bill.
Jack sets his glass on the table by the sofa. “How do you feel about making men’s suits in women’s cuts, Valentino?” he leadingly asks.
The Italian puts his own drink down, gestures as he speaks: “A suit is a suit, Capitano. I just measure a little different, that is all.”
“Yeah?” Jack gently prompts.
“Yes, Capitano. You see, the ladies who love other ladies, they come to Casa di Rosso.”
Jack nods, because he knows, he’s seen them outside the shop, more than once, wearing suits and hats, some of them smoking cigarettes. “So you wouldn’t mind if I brought my people to you, men and women? And you would be discreet?”
Valentino sighs, and tells him in a voice that suggests he should already know this fact, “The man who makes and sells clothes, he always discreet, Capitano.”
“Just what I needed to hear, Valentino. Thank you,” Jack replies, with a smile.
“Prego, Capitano, prego.”
