Love In Dangerous Times

They toast Captain Harkness, and as Jack tells her yet more stories, one glass of whisky soon turns into two, then four.
“I watched so many men hide, for so long, Toshiko,” he says, then falls silent.
She'd ask how long, but Jack wouldn’t reveal that, she suspects.
“So difficult, denying himself so much. Difficult for me, too, being careful for all those years, avoiding prison and hard labour. Couldn’t flirt my way out of that.” Jack laughs, awkwardly, before turning serious, with: “Eighty years is a helluva long time.”
It is; all Toshiko can do in reply is nod.

A/N - Male homosexuality was recriminalised in England and Wales in 1885, and was not decriminalised again until 1967.
