Maybe it was his support of Bush's silly war, combined with his attitudes towards muslims in Australia, that did him in.

More likely the fact that he'd win elections, and afterwards claim "a manadate" for issues that were never discussed in the run-up anyway! He was a wanker and a lier, thinking that once in office he had carte blanche to do anything.
