She must see a vet ASAP. Can you get the emergency service? Cats can be in pain without showing it.

That was the opinion of Jenny from across the road, who's had plenty of cats. She suggested that I clean this with salt water, then keep Gabby in a room overnight to keep it clean, and take her to the local vet (where she has a record) in the morning. I think that's a sensible compromise.

Yes, my neighbour across the road though t so too. Taking her to the vets today.
