I see videos every now and then of animals in distress. It's hard to see something like this where a seal pup is stuck in some fishing nets that some stupid fisherman just either threw off his boat or let it slide off.
I'm always pleased to see humanity reaching out to these animals and helping them out. Glad these men were able to help the pup. Makes me wonder, though, how long that seal had to live with that netting around him. Poor thing. Interesting to hear all the noise coming from the seals though. And how they scattered so quickly when the men got too close.
It is great to see humanity reaching out that way. :)
The seal didn't seem to have lost a lot of weight - I don't think the poor thing would have been able to hunt or even swim with that wrapped around him - and the entanglement hadn't started cutting into him yet, the way that some of the entangled seals unfortunately suffer, so it seems like they were able to get to him fairly soon, at least.
The noise of the seals is always amazing to me, even after having seen so many of their videos - it's some unexpected combination of sheep, goats, and donkeys, and sometimes, dogs. :D
They do have an interesting sound. While the guys were trying to rescue the pup, I kept thinking that maybe one of the bigger seals would be coming up trying to protect the pup. I was kinda surprised that didn't happen. Or maybe the seals just sensed the men were there to help, not hurt.
From all the videos I've seen, these particular seals tend to simply run if they see something as a threat. They might defend their babies if they are really close by, and a few seals will turn and charge, but more often than not, they head for the water. The OCN team has actually talked about having to be careful when the pups are too young to swim because they can't startle the group or they risk the little seals being abandoned on the beach.
