I've never heard of this book, or this movie, but it does not surprise me that the movie doesn't capture the religious undertones and aspect of the book. Hollywood has a way of misrepresenting religious themes and glossing over the true meaning and message of the gospels. It's a shame, I think. I am bothered to some respect when movies just don't "get it", which is why I usually stay away from those movies.
So true and well said! I usually do the same thing, but this was supposed to have been produced, in part, by a Christian Pastor, and I had seen other Christians mentioning how good they thought it was, so I was hopeful that it would be different. Unfortunately it wasn't.
I really recommend the book if you ever have the chance. :) It's the true story of a little boy who nearly died and came back with incredible stories of Heaven. The movie, though, cut out the heart of the story and the heart of the Gospel. I was so bothered by the movie that I would honestly like get rid of the DVD, but I don't want to sell the movie for fear that someone would buy it and think, "Oh, so that's the Gospel," when it's not. :/
I'll put the book on my read list and check it out. It may be awhile, though. You would think that a movie where a Christian Pastor was involved would not let the meaning behind Christ get lost. It's too bad. If you don't want to sell the movie, just bring it to a Goodwill truck or something and donate it. That's what I would do.
If you do read it, I hope you enjoy it. It's such an amazing story, and so encouraging. :)
*nods* You would think that. Though, I've heard since that this particular Pastor isn't necessarily known for biblical preaching, so that may be part of it.
Donating it might work, though it still leaves me with the same concerns... :-/ I don't want someone to get the movie and think that's the whole truth. I can't help thinking that it's a very dangerous message - it implies that God loves us no matter what so there's no need to obey him and we can do whatever we want. But I can't help thinking of the verse, "We know that we have come to know [God] if we keep his commands. Whoever says, 'I know him,' but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person." 1 John 2:3-4. God's love is incredible, but it's not all there is. I so wish the movie had shown that.
