OOM: An actual effort

Try and be a parent, Random had said. It's another thing that makes Ramon want to hit something, because Random knew very well that he wasn't going to refuse him anything just before he walked out of the door.

So he's taken him down to the beach. It's morning and warm and the kid always seems to like it when it's like this. So, that's what they're

He sits in the sand and pats at it. Not even a sandcastle, really, just playing in the dirt. Sometimes he says things to it, in a mix of Thari and everything else spoken in the house. More often, though, he just plays.

Ramon watches him, as he usually does. The difference this time is that he sits opposite him, close at hand, and is trying to work up the will to participate.

'Making something?'

He speaks Portuguese today. May as well give the kid some practice.

"Thinking."

He says in the same language, looking up at Ramon with (Random's) trusting green eyes,

"Don't make until you think."

He wonders how long Random had been thinking about disappearing to go and make Martin. Well. There's something new to ponder on later, when the boy has been read to sleep and the first of the drinks are poured.

'Your dad teach you that?'

He pulls a small plastic spade from a small plastic bucket and puts it next to him. And grits his teeth as he does. How the fuck did I ever wind up here?
