Many thanks for your insights and good wishes.

I think there are definite parallels between UK publishers and the Australian ones you mention - the only thing we can be sure of is change.

I didn't know that you were an author. (Or if I did know, I had forgotten.) So I just googled your name (plus "gardening") and found out a few things about you. Cool! (How does it feel to be google-stalked?)

Some very insightful comments about the market for non-fiction books-in-print, or for that matter, the literary market in general. Speaking as somebody who hopes to shepherd a manuscript (i.e., my PhD dissertation which will be done and defended in 2011) to publication within the next five years, I hope there's still a market of some kind for academic books in print. I mean, it's a matter of pride to actually see a bound book from a respectable academic press, with my name on it as author. Not that I expect to make any money off of it, or that more than 25 people will actually read it from cover to cover (though perhaps one or two hundred might be persuaded to buy it, while most copies will go to university libraries).

Cheers,

Bruce

I suspect we have all Google-stalked ourselves at some point, so no harm done!

...publication within the next five years

The book market will, I am sure, be somewhat different in five years... but just how different is anyone's guess.
