The School Library Journal released their list of Top 100 Picture Books for this year. I'm going to keep this list and update it with the ones we read. We've got a long way to go!

1: Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (1963)
2: Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown (1947)
3: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (1979)4: The Snowy ( Read more... )

Oh man, 'The Monster At the End of This Book' was my favorite book as a little kid. I stumbled on it in the Christmas Tree shop a few years ago and bought it for my infant cousin... and for me :)

I think I'd do better with a British list. I haven't even heard of most of these and so many classics are missing. There's no Shirley Hughes! How can you have a list of picture books where Alfie doesn't get locked out? Where are Meg and Mog? Where's The Tiger Who Came To Tea? Where's Winnie the Witch? Where's Each Peach Pear Plum?

(Do you not have Each Peach over there? It's a bit like Where's Waldo, if you replaced Waldo with a selection of characters from myths and fairytales, told the whole thing in verse and added a plot where the three bears have to save the life of Baby Bunting and turn a wicked witch into a good one through the healing powers of pie. Pretty much every British person under the age of forty can recite at least the first few lines by heart.)

I'd never heard of Each Peach Pear Plum, but I just put one on hold for us in our library system.

I may go look for a British list now. Something to tackle after we finish this one!
