Carter shuffles in to breakfast at just about the last minute. He grabs some coffee and a couple of pastries (regarding them a little suspiciously; they're not his usual sort of breakfast) and looks around hopefully for some eggs and bacon.

Nothing you'd really want today, Carter; she would know, she's been looking at it since five this morning. And she's about done looking at it for today, having stepped out of the kitchen to get away from a couple people and pick up after a couple more. When she catches sight of him, she looks back to ask if there's anything she can do.

He blinks at her, and it seems to take a few seconds for his brain to catch up with what his eyes are telling him. Finally he cracks a smile. "Morning, Miss Lua. Good to see you again." Why yes, that's a little joke there.

Has she not caught him at the right time? This is the end of her day, but it might be the start of his. She lets herself give him an embarrassed smile at what's supposed to be a joke, even if it gives her a feeling something's a little off. She doesn't know him real well yet, but it's not quite like what she knows from him. "Least they're gone. You doing all right?"

Carter's wandering about as he often does, taking note of who he meets and people's daily routines. He's also determinedly avoiding his warden.

Narvin patrols the Barge multiple times a day. He calls it patrolling, but in truth it's half patrolling, half spying--taking note of who is spending time with (and possibly conspiring with) whom, eavesdropping on any conversations he can, and taking mental notes on the various denizens of the Barge.

It's inevitable that he'd run into Carter eventually.

And unfortunately it's literally "run into", since Carter is still in a bit of a fog; he comes around a corner not quite looking where he's going and collides with Narvin. It's more of a shoulder-bump than a knock-the-other-guy-flat sort of thing, but embarrassing and awkward nonetheless.

"Beg your pardon. Didn't see you coming."

"Indeed." Narvin raises an eyebrow and brushes his shoulder off as if the slight contact might have left debris. It's not intended to be a disdainful gesture, just the reaction of a repressive individual from a touch-shy culture. But Narvin doesn't go to much effort to be subtle or tactful about it, either.

"It's Mr. Carter, isn't it?"

Carter's actually found something to cheer him up-a copy of Raymond Chandler's Farewell My Lovely, which he was reading on the train up to Newcastle and which he never got to finish.

Armand is looking for something new to read himself. He's read through many classics, and is hoping for something more silly and light-hearted. He's not a very intimidating figure in his 18th century frock-coat, and is probably one of the shorter adult males on the shop. He hesitates, but the reader seems so enthralled he wants to know if the book is any good.

"Hello there, monsieur. Would you recommend that book?"

Carter looks Armand over, the faintest amusement tugging at the corner of his mouth at the frock-coat.

"Oh, it's all right," he says. "Detective story, if you like that kind of thing."

Armand didn't seem to notice the scrutiny, although he fidgeted a little while he thought over the topic. "I cannot say that I hate them. It depends on the writing, I should think."

"And I don't believe we've met before. I'm Armand St. Just."

Dinner cartergetsyou November 30 2011, 14:44:51 UTC
Carter's sitting alone, back to a wall, observing. He's not exactly radiating waves of "sit down and have a chat", but he won't shoo away anyone who does approach him. Particularly not pretty women.

"Evening, Carter" Rourke would be standing outside of the mess hall, a casual, cordial smile on his face.

"Rourke." Carter acknowledges the other man with a nod. "How're you this evening?"

"I guess I can't complain too much, all things taken as they are. Dinner worth having tonight?"
