After concluding his communication with Rhade over the network, Rinzler immediately departed to intercept the Nietzschean on his way to the infirmary.

The Program could not pinpoint exactly what had driven him to offer his company to the User; only that there was something wrong about the entire situation and that Rhade should not be left to bear it alone. So it is he came clattering down the stairs and out into the level two hallway not long after the other man, all silent concern.

There was something about being in the presence of someone doing their best to be stoic: it touched the competitor in him. Made him realize that he was losing his much needed calm and almost the second he saw Rinzler he started regulating his breathing to the best of his ability.

He tucked his hands behind his back, slowing his gait and waiting for Rinzler to catch up with him.

"You came." That was almost a thank you for coming sort of you came.

Rinzler fell in step beside Rhade, matching his strides without thinking about it (perhaps without even realizing it).

"Yes." He came. He didn't miss that undertone, either; he gave Rhade a cover once-over to see if there was any physical harm to go with this terrible black mood that had come over his (there was a User value-judgment to go with this--) friend.

He stopped short of the infirmary, and then turned his back on it, thinking for a moment about how he should handle this. He reached out, placing a hand on Rinzler's shoulder, meaning to stop him even if the man willingly stopped.

"If I engage in a series of inconclusive tests, it will only bring further embarrassment to myself." He spoke relatively quietly.

"If I tell them that this was my own doing, I risk another public announcement, but also stands the chance of making people leave me alone." And he wanted to be left alone. So badly. He hated exposing his weaknesses, the hardships he already had been through were excruciating to talk about mostly because they were humiliating, and now this weakness being brandished around in the need to help. His own doing he was willing to say, or let people come to the conclusion of. An accident. He drummed his fingers on Rinzler's shoulder, hand still lingering there ( ... )
