Her eyes went wide for a moment, and then she smiled, a little nervously. She'd always felt awkward around Costigan's warden, for more reasons than she could possibly count, and it turned out that having graduated didn't really do anything about those pesky human feelings of embarrassment, awkwardness, and, yes, shame.
He shifted a little awkwardly, barely stifling a yawn and rubbing a hand over his eyes. Weirdly enough, he didn't entirely disapprove of their relationship, but of course, he'd never told Mal that, and while he didn't want to meddle in Costigan's business, he also did sort of want to show he was trying to be supportive. Which mean searching for something to say.
"I'm ... I'm well. Very well." She wondered if Costigan had said anything to him yet. "better than I've been in a long time, I think," she admitted. She wrung the kitchen towel in her hands; realised she was doing it and stopped. "And you?"
For some reason he didn't dwell on, he felt himself relax and smile much more genuinely. "Tired."
"That's good. Especially here, considering how things usually work." Seriously, things went to hell so quickly around here, anything good was good to hear about. "Did you get hit with the animal flood?"
