She didn't know how she hadn't realized it ages ago. She'd spoken to him, listened to his false words. She hadn't thought of him in weeks.

But now it was all very, very clear. He was just like Arthas. Just like the man who had torn out her soul, forced her into black oblivion and this curse beyond death.

Just like him in almost every way. And so for that, he would have to die.

Finding him was the difficult part. The killing wouldn't be - or so she imagined. She had a crossbow now and knives. This would be over soon enough - just as soon as she found him.

Elric had become increasingly cautious since Drake's attack and since his own public pronouncement, and was thus paying fairly close attention to his surroundings as he made his way around the Barge nowadays.

He was now on his way back to his room on Level 1. Not exactly starting at every shadow, but on the lookout.

How fortunate. Sylvanas lived on Level 1. Normally, she'd be waiting for Arthas to show his face, but tonight, today-

She shook her head. She'd deal with this pale imitation first. Then her attention could return to Arthas. Child's play. She slipped out of the shadows, crossbow raised as she sighted down the bolt.

She was extremely fortunate to still have the weapon and she planned to make the most of it. She squeezed the trigger and there was a dull 'thwick' as the hook released and sent a crossbow bolt zipping down the hallway. A moment later she was pulling the cable back into position for another shot.

He heard the release of the hook a fraction of a second before the bolt grazed his shoulder.

Elric flung himself back against the wall, drawing his long knife. "Who goes there? Show yourself!"

Kill him. Make him pay.

Her lip curled in disgust - she'd missed! Ah, well. She still had a dozen bolts to use. She slotted a new one into place and stepped forward, red eyes gleaming as she brought the weapon to her shoulder for another shot.

"You had me fooled for a little while; I hadn't realized just how much like Arthas you really were. No longer; now you're going to pay. Just like he will."

"So you have taken up Ardent's cause as well?" Elric snapped. He was reaching the end of his patience with this affair-no, he had passed it a long time ago. He threw up his hands and strode forward. "Well, come then! Put an end to it, woman, and let me be."

"Ardent...?" For a moment her aim wavered. "I don't know what the dwarf has to do with any of this. I do this for myself."

She should kill him now. Quickly.

"Indeed? Is your hatred of Arthas so powerful, so profound, that you would take arms against one whose sole connection is a passing resemblance to your enemy?" He didn't back down. "What will this accomplish, Sylvanas? Save a stay in zero?"

"It will remove you from this world, however temporary that might be!" She shot back, but there was doubt creeping into her thoughts. Her finger twitched. She should shoot. Kill him. Don't listen to him. He's exactly like Arthas.

But-

Kill him.

Why?

Elric was almost close enough now to reach out and push the crossbow out of the way. He closed the distance and put out his hand to do so.

"Cease this foolishness. If this is anything like the other three, the urge will pass when you lower your crossbow. You need not go through with this, Sylvanas."

Too close. The cross-bow steadied.

"Stay back, Elric, or I swear I will put this bolt through your eye-!"

She should've done that before she let him get this close, but where was this feeling that he was right. Where had this feeling of vengeance come? Why was he so close to Arthas in her mind?

It didn't matter, whispered a voice at the back of her head, kill him. He was a monster.

"What have you done to me?"

Her mind made that conclusion easily enough, even if a part of her was disturbed by the lack of control she was exhibiting.

"I have done nothing," Elric said firmly, still refusing to flinch. "But there is a sorcery at work that would use you to kill me. If indeed you do wish to slay me, I would that you did so of your own free will, not as another's tool."

"This... is my will!" She hissed in reply.

Because it was. Wasn't it? But that niggling little thought, the idea that she was being used, rankled her.

She took a step back, crossbow still pointed. She needed to kill him. Make him pay for-

For what?

She fought down the bubbling rage, the urge to annihilate him and slowly lowered the weapon, crimson eyes narrowed in an appraising look. A slight tremble in her hands.

"...I do not like being used."

"Nor I, and I do not like seeing people used at my expense." He watched her carefully, his own crimson gaze meeting hers. "Does it pass, this urge to take my life?"

She still wanted to do violence. She still wanted to hurt him. There was still that little voice at the back of her mind, urging her to sink the crossbow bolt into his eye socket.

"Not entirely. But... but I have not quarreled with you before now."

As much as it pained her, she would let it pass. For now.

"Go before I change my mind!"

"Consider me gone," he said, not turning his back on her, but continuing to face her as he stepped backward toward his door.
