Reading through Barron's post it notes had been a surreal experience. Prefect's initial response to finding that Barron had used his power again and that he'd managed to get himself killed in the process, had been... somewhat less than sympathetic, but when he got around to actually reading Barron's notes and journals? Seeing the full extent to which his memory loss controlled his life, and forced his hand, meant that by the time it actually came to needing to address Barron about his problems, Prefect honestly didn't know whether he should be feeling anger or pity towards his inmate ( ... )

Barron gave Prefect a somewhat blank look as he approached, but managed to connect the dots. His warden. Barron smiled weakly, tossing the book to one side. It hadn't been that interesting ( ... )

"I already asked him." Prefect replied, simply, "Last time you did something like this, you promised me that you'd only use your powers if it was to protect yourself, if you were in danger of dying? And instead, you used them to manipulate Perry, and to exploit his guilt and his loyalty. I can't let you do that to people, and I can't let you keep doing this to yourself."

It felt a little silly, to be explaining Barron's own crimes to him, but it was kind of the only way to deal with this. Prefect was fairly certain that Barron wouldn't remember on his own.

"It's not like taking away your hands. You're not helpless, and without your powers, we can start rebuilding your memories again. So you won't need to try and force people to help you."

"I was in danger of dying!" Barron insisted, despite the fact that he hadn't had the chance to check his journals to see if that was true. "I didn't have a choice in what I did. Dawsey's a psychopath. I had to pick the only weak point that he had."

That, of course, was completely untrue. There were numerous other angles that Barron could have tried. He simply hadn't wanted to waste his time with them. It was better to do something that he was sure about.

"And I didn't want Dawsey to help me. It wasn't like that." Barron said. He didn't have an alternate scenario to offer, so he just kept on talking. "This is against basic human rights, you know. You can't take away someone's opportunity to make choices. You basically just decided for me what was best. That's not fair..."

There was a telling pause at the end. Barron had been about to say Prefect's name, to drive the point home, but found that he couldn't remember it. It was a decidedly awkward moment.
