Hayley had spent most of the day alone in her room, anxiously awaiting the next responses for Harvey, Jack, and even the mysterious Daniel Dunne. Jack and Daniel had offered especially good advice and entirely relevant; Harvey was still her best friend and she missed him terribly. When the day faded to evening and the evening to night, she finally began to grow wary of the encroaching hour, then depressed as it neared. By midnight, she was nothing but a sulk

Will placed the salad, no covered with saran wrap, on the table, then went to answer the door. He didn't consider how it might seem to have Hayley over in the middle of the night. Maybe that just didn't seem to matter in a place where little-kid floods just seemed an everyday thing.

"Come on in," he said pleasantly And stepped aside. He knew a fake smile when he saw one, and attempted one of his own. he closed the door behind her and returned to the kitchen.

"Things are just about done." He turned down the heat on the pasta, stirred them, and set the sauce to low. "I didn't add anything to it yet," he said, glancing over at her. "I wasn't sure what you would like." A half-shrug, and he nodded toward the cupboard beside the stove. "I don't have too many spices, so if you want, just throw whatever in."

He moved like a man who needed to keep busy. Plates and salad bowls were retrieved and set on the table.
