Arthur gritted his teeth, recognizing the voice and the propensity for polytheism. There were only so many people who had magic abilities, wanted to see Perry and had a reason to hide from Arthur in doing so. He rolled his eyes and set his coffee down, standing and going towards the source of the noise.

"Just show yourself, Loki. This is pathetic."

Arthur totally linefaced at that. And... what the hell was Loki wearing, anyway? Why was a Norse god dressed like somebody from the--

Oh, nevermind.

"You got caught trying to undermine another warden less than twenty-four hours after I explicitly told you not to. Do it again, and I'll make your attempts public." He took another step forward, looking down at the shorter man, keeping his voice low and rough. "How many times do I have to tell you not to interfere with my inmate?"

SOMETIME AFTER LOKI'S FAIL!VISIT hatestriangles April 4 2011, 04:16:15 UTC
Perry had a talent for being stubborn, so a lot of the past two days? Had been spent in silence. Whenever Arthur tried to talk to him after that first conversation, Perry had just ignored him or shut the talk down with sarcastic asshole replies. Zero was boring, sure, apart from Loki's attempted visit, which, admittedly, Perry hadn't been paying too much attention to; he knew the god approved of what he'd done, though, having seen his replies to Crane's broadcast. Being locked up was frustrating, but it wasn't the big scary end-all punishment everyone seemed to make it out to be. Killing Rex was so worth a week in a cell.

The big inmate wasn't about to start a conversation with his warden so he fiddled with his journal instead, checking the feed, seeing who was saying what. The most vocal were people saying how terrible it was, of course. Typical. How long would it be before they just forgot this, too?

Luckily, Arthur had some books and his iPod to keep him occupied, so while this was boring as hell for him, it wasn't as bad as it could be.

...

No, that was a lie. He was bored out of his skull.

"Do you like anything about the Barge, Perry?" It wasn't a trap or anything; the question was straightforward, driven by a lack of anything else to do.

There was silence while Perry thought about it (and, yeah, debated if it was a trap or not). Was there anything he liked here? People, not so much. The actual places they sometimes visited? Yeah, though it was a pick and mix in terms of good and bad. The actual fact that he was travelling through space with people from the distant past and the far future on a magic ship that distorted reality? That could be horrible, but was also, objectively, fascinating.

Finally, after a long pause, he glanced over at Arthur from where he was sitting on the floor and replied, "It's full of a hell of a lot more shit than I ever thought was even close to possible. When it's not fucking with you, it can be interesting."

Arthur rubbed the back of his neck and nodded. Damn, he was feeling restless. "Yeah, that's about the only charm of the Barge I can think of, too." He took a drink of lukewarm coffee. "And then, when it seems like things'll be all right, it throws a curveball at you."

David had seen the video of the big inmate, Perry Dawsey, beating a man to death. Almost everyone on the barge had. But unlike most of those who'd seen the video, David wasn't shocked or appalled or afraid.

He was impressed.

So he found out where this Perry guy was. No problem, Level 0 wasn't much of a secret. But then he couldn't get in. So instead of calling attention to himself, he simply morphed a roach and rode in on the shoes of the first visitor. A weird guy who, as far as his awful roach eyes could tell, was wearing platform shoes and a suit lifted straight from the early episodes of Saturday Night Fever.

Of course, it simply wasn't going to work to try to talk to this guy with his warden there. After his run-ins with Bourne and Graham, David had absolutely no trust for any of the wardens. Arthur didn't leave to sleep, but he did leave for coffee. The moment he did, David demorphed at the end of the cellblock, where hopefully no one could see him ( ... )

Perry had been enjoying the brief respite from Arthur's oppressive company, taking the time to do a few push-ups and sit-ups. He wasn't expecting anyone else to show up, considering that his warden had made it clear he was going to be spending the whole week down there. Anyone who wanted to get revenge for Rex's murder would surely be smart enough to just wait until the week was done, and anyone who wanted to congratulate him... well, he wasn't sure anyone (other than Loki, apparently) was brave enough to just come out and say that they enjoyed seeing Rex die.

All in all? He was pretty startled when someone spoke. He hadn't even heard the door open.

"Yeah, I'm awake," he replied evenly, after a moment's pause. He wasn't going to say much until he could work out more about who this was and why they were down here.

David pulls up the chair Arthur had been sitting in, taking the warden's seat without hesitation. The chair scrapes along the floor as he moves it closer to the bars until he's close enough to be seen completely. He's within grabbing reach too, but that's not something he's worried about.

"I'm David." he says by way of introduction, offering no last name. "New here. I saw the video of you kicking the shit out of that Rex guy. A creepy dude named Crane gave me your name, so I figured I'd come down to meet you. I'm an inmate too, and so far you're the only guy I've seen here with enough balls to stand up to these pricks."

He doesn't know about Rex being an inmate too, but even if he did, it wouldn't mean much to him. The dude had used mind control machines - that put him in the same category as the Yeerks, a slug.

Perry got up and moved closer to the bars. How had this guy got in here? If he was an inmate... he had to have come in with a warden, right? The ex-linebacker frowned; he didn't like mysteries. He crossed his arms and regarded David, sizing him up. He was just a kid. Not that that actually meant a lot on the Barge - Hayley being the obvious example - but Perry still had trouble taking young inmates seriously. He was, however, an unknown factor, with an unknown way of getting in here.

"That little cocksucker had it coming, kid. Trust me, I've been here a while; if you wait for the wardens to do something about a problem, you're going to be waiting for fucking ever," he said, shrugging. A small smile crept onto his face. Yes, he was still convinced he'd done the right thing, no matter what bullshit Arthur tried to guilt-trip him with. "You enjoyed the show, huh?"

She's been watching. Quietly, from the shadows. Watching him, the door, the other inmates, all from a safe distance. She won't come any closer. She's just watching.
