Where: Metcalf Diner, near the train tracks. Seedy place. Where the coffee tastes more like potting soil than coffee.

The Master rolled his eyes and shoved the crayon and paper away. "A weapon that runs on water? Oh, don't strain yourself thinking up a challenge or anything," he remarked snidely, flipping through the menu instead with a great look of boredom. "Oh, with all of these gourmet options, how could I choose only one?"

When Rose returned she had traded her jacket for an apron. "Consider it an adventure; pick something you've never had before." Which...well, one never knew, did they? There were a few things there she'd never had before, but he had more years on her and was more widely traveled. "As for the device...earth resources and human technology only -- and none of it invented after 1900." She raised an eyebrow. "Challenging enough?"

She caught a strange look from a truck driver sitting at the bar.

"First in his class. Can I get you anything?"

He turned back to his pancakes.

"But grits sound so appetising, I don't see how they could possibly live up to my expectations," he said snidely. The Master waved a dismissive hand. "Go serve the people, Rose Tyler. They're waiiiiting."

"I'm around if you need me," she said finally, leaving him there. He could wave her over when he was ready to eat, and there was really no sense in chasing after him until he chose to answer her. For now there was just the one customer; she could handle that.

Nine hesitated at the door before strolling in like he owned the place. Opened both of the double doors at once. His hands in his grey jacket, his step energized, and his look... Well.. Ragged was a word for it. His blue eyes were sharp, looking for Rose, but he didn't see her yet. She must have been in the back. So he walked along the tables, smiling wide and nodding in response to people's disgust and contempt ( ... )
