Who: Tosh & Harper When: Forward-dated to about midday Friday (I THINK?) Where: Engine room What: Welding! Well, actually the opposite, but there's a welder involved. Warnings: Completely invented science.
Harper kinda knew this was coming. They'd combed over every other available inch of the engine room and hadn't found any cause for what was happening, and Harper... well, Harper had apparently set the same mental deadline as Toshiko had for what they needed to do now.
"Yeah. I mean, the charge won't last forever, but it should be good for..."
He glanced at her, "For getting to the fuel tank. That's where we go from here, right?"
She lifted her shoulders in a helpless little shrug. "We have to. If there was a mechanical fault in the components we can access, we'd have found it by now. If there'd been deliberate sabotage, we'd have noticed it. But nothing's changed - the engine can run, so we have to assume that there's just nothing for it to run on. We've got no choice."
Toshiko looked warily at the sheet of metal that separated them from - God only knew what - and she felt a creeping unease in the back of her mind. This felt like opening the Rift all over again, exploring the forbidden, but she had to rationalise. There was nothing else they could do.
Harper nodded, "Yeah. Yeah, I know." He took a deep breath and shifted, pushing himself to his feet, "Okay, let's take a stab into the belly of the Barge then."
He tugged the Nanowelder from where it was tucked into his toolbelt, igniting it, before glancing down to Toshiko. He wasn't sure if he'd ever let her use his nanowelder before, but since if this didn't work it was unlikely that they'd ever get another reason to use it, it seemed like this might have been the last chance. Turning it, he offered her the handle, "You wanna start us off?"
Toshiko suspected there was a hint of 'You wanna share the blame?' hidden in this question, but she just gave a small, sincere nod. She had watched him use it before, and being as intuitive as she was, she could use it now without much guidance. She accepted the welder.
"Thank you."
It would have been invaluable to have a scanner, some way of knowing they wouldn't be cutting into anything vital, but all she could do was make an educated guess. She tapped at the metal, finding a line on the wall that sounded hollow, and pressed the welder into the wall.
