Adrian, or "Alexander," rounded the corner, Hayley and Ned in tow close behind him. At the sight of "Evelyn," his eyes narrowed. He held the gun in one hand, not yet raised, but that would be changing soon

Hayley wasn't oblivious enough not to notice Evelyn, but she didn't understand the significance of the other woman's arrival or why Adrian was telling her to leave. The girl set a hand on Adrian's bicep, trying to call his attention and silently begging him to explain what was going on and what his mind could possibly be thinking that would have him so determined to abandon his warden and now to be alone. It seemed like they had only begun to overcome their previous issues and she hated that he seemed so ready and willing to create more.
"No! Adrian, tell me what's going on." She had completely forgotten Ned at this point, though her warden followed several steps behind them. The girl moved in front of him in a greater effort to draw his attention, though she provided little-to-no obstacle for the taller and older man. It was arrogant to think that her word or presence alone might influence Adrian's decisions in any way, but it was all that she had in this moment and so she clung to it. "Please."
"I'm going to kill her, and then I'm going to kill myself. I'm through playing this game."
That was exactly the plan. It was a waste of effort, and he was probably ruining the only friendship he'd ever had in his life, but he felt fine with that, though he knew he would regret it later. In some way, it was reminiscent of every decision he made in life: never what he really wanted but always for the greater good, always for some other cause or abstract theoretical principle, always for his own suffering, as if the more he suffered the more righteous he would become, and prison ships were for punishment, not for making new friends. The Comedian had made a few good points; Adrian had to give credit where credit was due. 'Another ant stamped out on the anthill?' So be it, then.
"She's Martha. I'm going to prove a point to both her and the Admiral."
He felt like that was a satisfactory explanation, and he raised the gun level to Evelyn.
She heard people talking, and slowly she turned toward them. Evelyn felt a bit like a ghost herself, and her movements were slow, jerky, probably as an aftereffect of the drugs she had taken in order to slow her pulse and breathing to make it appear that she had been dead. The world sounded loud to her, and she rubbed at the side of her head for a moment, the movement light. She noticed the glimmering black of the gun before she noticed who was carrying it, and frankly she was surprised to find that the person who had it wasn't Price
