“L!” a voice suddenly called out from behind. It was the very same person, but at the opposite end of the hall. He was far, almost out sight, and he seemed to be struggling against a large, hulking shadow. Occasionally the light from the screens would glint across the shadowy figure, show a flash of fangs for yellow-red eyes. The young man at the back of the hallway struggled, ducking grabbing hands, snapping jaws. He seemed to be trying to run to L, but whenever he made the slightest bit of headway, a huge back hand would reach out and drag him back. “L!” he called again.
Meanwhile, the original figure had come to a stop at the opposite end of the hall. He halted, back to L, standing perfectly still for a few long moments. Then he turned his head slowly, a single apple-red eye visible over his shoulder, teeth that were just a little too sharp behind his crooked smile. He watched, and waited. Then one by one, the many monitors began to blink out, slowly but surely filling the long hall with darkness.
L had froze in his tracks the moment he heard the cries behind him. Whirling, he stared back at the other figure fighting against the shadowy figure. His heart pounding in his chest, he tried to figure out what to do. Should he keep chasing the figure fleeing him, or go back to save the one behind him?
As the screens began to shut off around him, L grit his teeth, panic barely showing behind his eyes. "The lights..." Then, as the familiarity of the word, slowly dawned on him, L took off back towards the struggling stranger. "Light!" The anxiety and fear within him grew as he turned his back on the more sinister version of this man, but his mind was made up. He had to save him. He knew something bad would happen as a result of letting the other escape, but that threat was an abstract one. The threat he rushed towards now was immediate.
Reaching a hand out, L flung himself forward. "Hold on, I have you!"
The more sinister red eyed figure at the end off the hall threw his head back and laughed. The sound was unbelievably cruel, and deranged. In the instant L moved for the struggling figure at the beginning of the hall, darkness took over completely, every single light blinking out. For a few long moments there was only blackness and emptiness, until a pair of red-yellow eyes lit up in the dark, and a sweet odor filled the air... apples, perhaps? Quiet crunching filled the silence
( ... )
L was breathing heavily now, though only in part due to his running. Everything seems so familiar to him, even as he couldn't completely place it. His head spun with confusion and he forced himself to try and calm himself and approach this rationally. Closing his eyes a moment he collected his thought, finally finding himself unusually aware of things.
"This... this isn't real. It's some kind of dream. A vivid one, but still a dream."
Looking over Light, L's eyes moved down to the book. The understanding of its significance slowly slithered its way into L's consciousness. When he spoke again, there was a slight hitch in his first word from the stab of pain that came with the memory. "Forgive me, Light, but I can't."
It was only then L became aware that the figure behind him had gotten closer. He looked back over his shoulder and locked eyes with the blood-red pair.
"'Nine, ten, never sleep again,' was it? I see..."
