Ted arrived five minutes early for his exam. He was quite nervous about the concept of a full physical. For all appearances, he was a healthy, early-30s adult male. But, internally? He had no clue what this radiation had done to him. The last doctor he had been around had been Karen's oncologist and the man had met an unfortunate fate. He was well past that stage of losing control, sure, but it was still an uncomfortable correlation.

He showed up dressed in casual flannel, and when he saw Dr. Jones, he introduced himself as Ted Sprague, even holding out a hand to shake, ever the gentleman.

Martha was waiting at the door, and she gave him a quick and encouraging smile. Martha felt a little uncomfortable doing this, but the conversation with Doctor Crane had made it so that she realized that she had been lax in doing it before now. She took a deep breath and then extended her hand towards the man when he had returned the gesture. Her handshake was calm and firm, and she gestured toward the private exam room.

"Nice to meet you, Ted, I'm Martha. Would you mind coming with me please? I promise to make this as quick and easy as possible." And she would really, especially considering the scanner that she had tucked within her pocket.

"Yeah, sure. No problem." Ted said as he did as requested. Her smile calmed him down a little. She had that confident, 'Everything-will-be-alright' manner that he liked in most doctors. He didn't quite believe her when she said 'quick and easy' however. Where he was from, a physical tended to take a while. Still, he was pleasantly nice to her, if obviously a little uneasy.

Martha smiled at him when she shut the door behind her, and then she gestured to the examination table. She had the scanner out of the pocket of her labcoat, and it was already giving her readings from him, even at this distance. She hadn't expected that, but Martha trusted the Admiral not to have someone who was dangerous to the barge there without having some sort of cap on his power. Still, the radiation didn't seem to be dangerous to anyone, not even Ted himself.

He didn't like this. Tim avoided doctors - doctors that weren't Alfred, anyway - because in his years as Robin, he'd sustained a lot of injuries. It was the same reason he couldn't play sports at school, the same reason he had to be careful about where he dressed and who saw the scars. He didn't really want to spin a story about how bad a driver his adoptive father was for Martha, but he didn't have much of a choice.

So around five, he walked into the infirmary, hands in his pockets. When he spotted Martha, he lifted one to wave awkwardly, before stuffing it back into his pocket.

For some reason, having to do Tim's physical was making Martha more than a little nervous. The fact that he had put it off for so long had made her concerned about it. Tim never really spoke to her about his past, and now she wondered if it was because he had some sort of fatal disease or something else that he didn't want her to find. She smiled at him, but the smile was laced with worry, and concern was laden in her eyes.

At the awkward wave, Martha made one of her own before she gestured to the small, private room that they were using for exams and headed over there, as soon as they were both inside, Martha fixed Tim with one of her patented 'the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth' look. "So, Tim, what aren't you telling me?"

A lot. Tim shrugged nonchalantly, though, and leaned against the bed. "Nothing, really. I mean - I'm just not a fan of doctors' offices. No offense," he added, glancing up at her. There was one way to play this, he just had to make sure it didn't go over the top. These scars were mostly explained away by car crashes. Except for the ones left by bullets.

This was why he didn't go for physicals.

"I've been in a few car accidents. They just...left a bunch of scars. I don't really like showing them off."

"You've been in a few car accidents?" Martha just stared at him. 'A few car accidents?' Who in the world was in a few car accidents? She didn't expect that by any stretch of the imagination. Further, Martha had worked in A&E and she knew that people who had been abused often would make up stories for their attackers actions. Poor Tim, a bunch of scars, the accident excuse (and she was certain it was an excuse) and the fact that he seemed so much more grown up than he should meant that Martha was completely suspecting abuse. She wasn't going to mention it of course, but she was reasonably certain of it.

Quickly, she went over and put her hands on his shoulders. "Don't worry, love, I'm not going to judge you for your scars." 'However you got them', she added mentally, giving his shoulders a squeeze.

Mano wasn't too thrilled about this himself, but evidently it was mandatory... and he'd had enough experiences of torture that he didn't want to see what this place considered as punishment?

"You actually allow treatment of the genetically defective?" he asked. "You must have gotten some extremely good terms on your rations..."

Martha met him with a smile, and then when he asked if she allowed treatment of the genetically defective, Martha frowned quickly. The expression was so quick that she didn't even have a chance to hide it when she normally would have. "I'm sorry, Mano, I'm not at all certain what you mean."

She ushered him toward the private room quickly, still frowning.

Mano allowed her to take him to the private room, without objection. There, he explained further.

"Medical care is rationed; those who prove themselves valuable to the Empire get more, the common citizen gets less. Usually the genetically defective do not get care, but the military allowed me some exception since I proved to be such a powerful weapon." Mano was as matter-of-fact about this as if he'd been discussing the weather.

"Then McCauley..." There was a flare of disgust as Mano spat out that name, "He was allowed to torture me for the next two sunturns." He shook his head. "Years, I should say. And from there I was locked in Takron-Galtos... again, without trial. But my being there automatically stripped me of all basic sentient rights -- and medical care was one of those rights, of course."

"And then, the guards killed me." Mano concluded. "And here I am."

(OOC: PMing the medical info next, but the above should warn you that he's a real mess.)

Martha stood there, once she had shut the door, and she listened as Mano spoke to her about what medical care was like on his world. 'Medical care', blimey it didn't even deserve the name. At all. It made her stomach twist as he spoke about such horrible things in such calm and conscious terms. She had gotten so much better, she felt, at hiding her emotions since she had come aboard the barge, but the concern and worry was written on her face.

Quickly she stepped close to him, and she put one hand on his arm. "Don't worry, Mano, we're not going to treat you any differently here. Here you deserve the same attention and respect that everyone else gets, yeah?" Her voice was soft but her tone was fierce because she meant it and wanted him to believe that she had meant it as well. This whole thing made her wish that she had a TARDIS of her own so that she could go and make certain to set things right in order so that those bastards couldn't do anything else like that again.

A cracked rib. He'd been here less than a month, and already he was injured. It was his own fault, of course; he shouldn't have let Drake provoke him like that, but it couldn't be helped now. This wasn't over, not by a long-shot, so he'd just have to be smarter about how he handled the kid next time.

He'd managed to patch his ribs himself (God knew he'd watched Wintergreen do it enough), but now was about the time he actually missed his healing factor. If he had his way, he wouldn't have bothered with the physical at all, but since his warden was insisting he get medical treatment, he might as well kill two birds with one stone.

"Doctor."

Martha didn't quite know who this person was. She'd gotten very busy running the infirmary, and now that there was this massive exodus towards the lab, she was expecting that she was going to become even more busy. Still, she had been remised in not greeting this person if she hadn't, and was even more remiss if she had greeted him and then simply forgotten about it. Martha was really hoping that she hadn't forgotten about it. Blimey, she needed more sleep and a vacation.

When he called her 'doctor', Martha smiled to him quickly, and she extended her hand in his direction. "Just Martha, please. We've so many Doctors about here that it's easier just to be a first name." The smile deepened to a grin for a moment before she gestured toward the small, private examination room that she had been using to conduct these sorts of physicals. It just made more sense to do so.

He shook her hand carefully, suppressing a wince from the brief movement. He'd forgotten how much of a pain in the ass a cracked rib could be, but as always, he made a point of not showing the discomfort he truly felt.

"I bet." Then, by way of introduction: "Slade Wilson."

He followed her into the examination room after that, not exactly pleased even though he understood the necessity of it. Or rather, the mandate. He'd never liked doctors very much, regardless of their intentions, but he would be civil throughout the exam.

Martha noticed the wince, and she frowned quickly upon seeing it. Apparently he was in the need of more than simply just a physical. Martha smiled when he announced his name, because it didn't mean anything for her. "Nice to meet you, Slade." Her steps were slow when she walked with him to the exam room, ready to catch him in case he fell down or needed assistance. Once they were in the room, Martha quickly gestured to the exam table.

"Can I ask what you did to your ribs?" Martha asked quickly, once the door was shut behind her, ensuring their privacy. She looked to him quickly, studying him but with a calm and polite smile.

Jace wasn't sure what to expect here, but Martha was a Warden here and she seemed very nice from the few times Jace had spoken to her so far. He arrived a few minutes early.

He was curious about what this would entail, he'd never heard of a healer that needed to examine someone while they were well. "Good evening."

When Martha saw Jace, she quickly grinned to him, and she came out to meet him with a smile. "Good evening," she responded quickly. "I promise, this won't hurt a bit." And it wouldn't thanks to the wonderful world of medical scanning.

Gesturing toward the small, private waiting room, Martha quickly started to lead the way.

That Martha felt the need to promise this wouldn't hurt a bit was a little concerning, but he hadn't seen anyone else warning people away from getting their physicals.

"Do people get physicals regularly where you're from?"

thegooddrjones May 31 2010, 16:59:27 UTC
"Yes," Martha answered quickly. "All the time, when they go into a new circumstance, or every few years in general. It's a good thing to know how your body should be when it's meant to be normal; that way we know what to strive for if something happens. Of course, we do them a bit differently back home." Martha grinned to him, and then held up the scanner. "I'm going to start now if it's all right; won't take but a minute."
