The cold reminded him of home. New!home, home that was Cardiff and the winter mornings navigating cold kitchen tile in bare feet, sensitive skin prickling while he waited impatiently for the kettle to boil. It reminded him of dårlig ulv stranden -Bad Wolf Bay- and the chill air whistling down the cliff faces and onto the beach. Back then it had shocked him just how cold cold really was, how it seemed so tangible and invasive, sneaking up into sleeves and shirt collars and right through one's clothes ( ... )

When she spoke again, her voice had lost some of its usual crispness.

"I am not sure where to begin."

His recurring headache was catching up with him; the dull throb resurfaced behind his eyes when he canted his head to the side and stepped around her.

"'Nother thing walking is good for, sorting thoughts." Curiosity gnawed at him to push for answers, but he knew that would be a battle he'd lose. They hadn't spoken on terms as amicable as this since their days in the Prydon Academy.

She gave him a slight raised-eyebrow look, then shrugged slightly and started walking. It was about half a dozen steps before she realised he meant a "walk" in that peculiar human definition, a sort of slow, purposeless amble, and she cut her pace.

After a moment she came out with the question that had been gnawing on her ever since she'd first learned of his particular ... condition. "How has it been, then? Being ... human?"
