Armand was out because he was trying to convince himself he wouldn't run into Rose Tyler. She was gone. Completely and utterly. He ate breakfast with Loki and then made sure he started his work shift, but watching the god clean things was utterly mind-numbingly boring, so Armand eventually left him to it.

He wasn't particularly watching for people, because psychologically he was still expecting to meet the eyes of someone he didn't want to meet, but the loud English-accented question caught him off guard. Armand jumped back, then smiled in relief. The question wasn't a hostile one, not at all.

"Oh, well, no I have not, monsieur. Were you on your way?"

Alec felt momentarily bad for scaring the guy - he wasn't going to get anywhere here by frightening people - so he didn't quite smile. Not all the way. Smiling still felt alien to him.

"Yes, I was," he said. "Do you want some company?"

Company sounded... good, actually. Another person would make facing the crowds so much easier. Armand nodded, then realized he probably should say something too. "That would be nice, yes. Thank you for asking."

Okay, so that was settled. It felt odd for anybody to thank him for anything, and Trevelyan realized that his former position hadn't really been one with great opportunities for human interaction. He hadn't thought he'd needed it, but...well, his actions around James had proven otherwise. He'd gotten too comfortable with his old friend, figured that James would understand.

And we all saw how well that went, he thought with a twinge of bitterness. "All right, let's go," he said, and kept walking in the general direction of the mess hall, or the galley - whatever they were calling it.
