Someone might have suspected that Vidal volunteered to catch the thief just to have an excuse to clobber something. (He would have never used the word "clobber", though, because it sounded silly and unimportant.) Someone might think that he spent his time waiting in the early hours of the morning with anticipation. The usually calm if not abrasive soldier displayed a certain sort of abandon when he turned to violence -- his particular sadism shone vividly, and this was a fact a few were already aware of, his Warden included ( ... )

Gaston turned, surprised. His arms were loaded down with egg cartons, and, had he been anyone else, he might have dropped them - thus rendering the eggs useless to anyone.

He contemplated the man with the skillet for a moment, then straightened to his full height. Vidal wasn't so big, and Gaston didn't feel much like explaining that he was used to eating eggs, and early.

"Or else what? You'll beat me with a frying pan?" He laughed loudly. "Like some housewife?

Vidal addressed him with perfect coolness. "No signor. You are stealing from the kitchens, and we have limited supplies. You understand this, si? So you cannot have many eggs when everyone is alotted only one or two each day. There are over one hundred people here for feeding." He examined the pan briefly. "So if you are going to be stealing, then I will be stopping you. And I will not simply beat you with a frying pan like some housewife because you and I are both men, and I do not use heavy things to give strength to my attack, which a frail woman would require to have an edge, si? I am using it because I intend to do serious irreparable harm to you, however, because I do not tolerate thieves."

Gaston's smile turned into a sneer and he put his free hand on his hip, the other arm cradling the eggs. Was this guy for real? So what if there were people to feed; there was other food. They could eat that.

Of course, the circumstances called for a bit of action. He'd have to part with the eggs for today and teach the Spaniard a lesson.

"Well, then I should probably-" he punctuated the sentence with a wordless shout and threw the eggs at Vidal.

Vidal did not expect more people to come in because it was hours before breakfast. Of course, he should have -- because both he and Gaston had Wardens, but the girl who entered was neither. He very calmly set the pan on the counter and brushed off his clothes. "I am catching the egg thief," he informed her.

Vidal beamed a little when she confirmed that he had succeeded. At her question about Rube, he sobered a little. "I offered to come in and look for the thief, because I am early always."
