Rising to his feet as she drew near, Armand had to hang onto the back of a chair to keep from going straight to Rose and hugging her. She looked utterly spent, broken and miserable. His heart squeezed painfully at the sight of her.
"You look as if you could use a friend? I admit I'm a bit battered and disreputable for that title, but I'm here for you." For what it's worth. He did hold a hand out to her. That was within propriety enough that if she took it, he wouldn't feel guilty.
When she made it clear she was going to hug him, Armand opened his arms to her and gathered her close. He rested his cheek against her hair. "I wish I could soothe your worries. You're being too hard on yourself. Don't you tell me that all the time?" He kept his voice low, since he was aware that she'd feel it as well as hear it.
