Sam had been taking a nap when the sound of knocking stirred him. He sat up, rubbing his eyes, then buttoned his shirt back up, since... well, he didn't really want to answer the door in his vest. He smoothed down his hair with one hand, then opened the door-- just a crack, not ready to fling it open just yet. He was surprised-- and a bit wary-- to see Charlie there, so he didn't open the door any further.
Charlie continued to stare downwards and scuffed a foot. "I came to...I came to apologize. For what I done. I ain't done right by you." The trick, he kept telling himself, was to look thoroughly defeated and broken, like this was the only option he had and was doing it in the hopes things might get better. He didn't expect Sam to believe it, not initially, but if he threw in a thing or two about Rose making him apologize and how he no longer felt so good about his actions (lies), well...
There wasn't any reason for a good warden not to be moved, he reckoned.
Sam blinked. On the one hand, he didn't trust Charlie, but on the other... changes of heart did happen. And, to be honest, he didn't know Charlie terribly well.... but then, this seemed odd, given what he did know about the outlaw. Sam stared back at Charlie. "Right. You came here to... apologise," he said, clearly sceptical.
Charlie rolled his eyes. "Well, it ain't like it was my decision. But Rose said that if we were gonna be gettin' on better footin', I had to do it." He figured that it would be a show of fondness to use his Warden's name; Sam could take it to mean they were getting along and Charlie was only trying to do as she asked.
"She said I had to get it in writin' from you-- that you'd heard it from me."
