"Circle of Friends." One of the best movies ever, simply for the reasons you listed... I loved it from the moment I saw it in the theater. When I see it now, my heart still breaks for Benny. *sigh* The book is always nearby; it's a great boredom-reliever.
Waiting for Circle of Friends to hit the theater was, for me, the approximate equivalent of those Star Wars nerds camping out for three months before the Phantom Menace. ;) Although I'm not crazy about the other Maeve Binchy books I've read, Circle of Friends was like...perfect.
The movie is almost too sweet to watch, though. I constantly find myself blushing on Benny's behalf. And say what I will about her being too skinny for the role, Minnie Driver was pretty awesome in it.
Are the other books not so great? So many times I have picked up one of her titles and contemplated buying it just to see if it is as wonderful as CoF. Something always told me not to. Hmm. Which is odd because once I get into an author I buy as many of their books as possible and indulge.
I agree, I couldn't picture anyone else playing Benny besides Minnie Driver. Incredible. :)
If you've only started watching The Office this season and haven't seen Seasons 1 and 2 I INSIST that you borrow them on DVD from somebody or rent them. The history of Pam and Jim is so wonderful and you'd be missing out on a LOT of great stuff if you've only watched this season. I know you're a hopeless romantic like me, which is why I know it would be totally worth it for you.
It's almost like they're real people to me. I'm so pathetic. :)
I totally just downloaded season 1 from iTunes, and am adding season 2 to my Netflix list as I type. The last time missaurora visited, she made me watch The History of Pam and Jim, Parts I-XVII on Youtube, and I was pretty much a goner ;)
Jim is so incredibly cute. I love that "I can't believe this crap" look he's always giving the camera.
Although the Jersey shore beats New England out on the cheesy tourist attractions (an elephant-shaped building and Miss America versus Lenny the 2,000 pound chocolate moose is no real contest as far as I'm concerned), our good old buttery, crispy New England fried dough wins over funnel cake any day of the week.
