There is a diamond commercial that's been on TV which in our modern egalitarian age I find particularly offensive. There's a thunderstorm outside, and this woman in her house turns around terrified by the lightning to huddle in the arms of her husband, who says "I'm here, and I always will be." Cut to the diamond advertisemant portion.
Cliche scripting aside, I find the whole premise of the add insulting on multiple levels. I think were I a female, I would find myself wanting to track down the marketing firm in question to start punching people in the head.
But of course, I agree with entirely on the general dislike of diamonds.
Dan- you don't need to be a woman to be offended enough to want to go punch the marketing firm... You would be such a rockstar if you did do it for the sake of everyone- the women who aren't incompetent and the men who shouldn't be manipulated by what these ads tell them to spend money that they don't have.
Of all the "precious" stones, the ones I like the LEAST are diamonds. Aside from the whole ethical issues involved (which are even more retarded given the fact that we can CREATE them in LABS), it's not even a pretty stone! It's like quartz! It's CLEAR!
(Then again, my favorite shiny rock tends to be alexandrite, which changes color depending on the light, and the one I own is also lab-created, instead of "natural"...chemically, there is NO difference between a "created" stone and a "natural" one.)
The "romantic" connotations associated with diamonds? Even more annoying. I could go on a very long-winded rant about THAT whole thing...

Besides, when have you or I done something because "that's what you're supposed to do". Screw that! I recall the old adage that an engagement ring was "supposed to be two months of his pay" Excuse me? 1/6 of my annual income? Sure, I can afford to save that...
If a lady was falling over me, it had better not be over some diamonds cuz that is honestly a materialistic idiot I want no part of in the first place.

There's a cultural assumption in the US that women should shave their legs because Gillete wanted some more market share in the 20s and ran a series of commericals.
That's always been my standard for best marketing scam of all time, but DeBeers is totally in the top ten.

Also, how creepy is it that the ad equates romance with the woman being suddenly incompetent?
