Next time he told me something, I'd just try to be critical about it. Try to be objective and do what was best for myself, rather than automatically believing him.

Someone who's prepared to lie to you at the expense of your well being clearly doesn't value whatever relationship they have with you. Whether the bonds between you are emotional or genetic doesn't matter, you shouldn't consciously allow them to hurt you purely out of principal.
