Title: Would You've Believe Me If I'd Told You?
Author: Last Winter Rose
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairing: Sam/Gabriel, Dean, and Castiel (close friendship between Dean and Cass but nothing more.)
Warnings: Rated for adult themed subject and contact, and Dean's mouth.
Spoilers: Mentions of events from S5E19 but otherwise, if you watch the show and you know the characters, then you're good to go.
Author’s Notes: This was really written for the
sabriel_bday, for
wolfish_willow’s birthday. Using her prompt of Dean and/or John (AU, perhaps?) finds out and reacts badly. Gabriel stands up for Sam. :D, but it also fit in nicely into my
lover100 TABLE for the Prompt #036: Secrets, (I hope no one mind that I'm using 'one stone to kill two birds' as the saying goes). I hope you like it
wolfish_willow and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!
Disclaimer: I do not own Supernatural or the boys and am only barrowing them…(I promise to give them back).
Summary:
When Sam starts acting weird a few days after the whole Elysian Fields Hotel mess, Dean just chuck it up to his little brother reacting to yet another ally of their falling at the hands of Lucifer. Little did he know there was more to it.
~*~
At first, Dean didn't mind so much, he had actually gotten uses to Sam's reaction to them losing a friend; an ally in the fight against Heaven and Hell, the only surprised this time was the fact of who the ally had been.
Gabriel, the Archangel, turned Pagan God turned Trickster and right there at the end, went back to his true Archangel self. Giving his life to save them from his own brother.
Dean had watched as Sam went through the normal routine; two days of silent sitting around the motel room doing nothing. Next, came the week of him wondering why they were still fighting? What was the point anymore?
Dean had gotten ready for the next two days, Sam throwing himself into hunt, after hunt, after hunt; not really paying attention to anything around him beside the current monster that he was trying to kill but that wasn't what came next.
Instead, Sam went back to being silent most of the time. Instead of going out hunting, Sam would sit in the room and do nothing but research. About what? Dean wasn't sure but he was guessing that it was about Lucifer. After two days of hanging around the motel, Sam started disappearing to the library, coffee shops, anywhere that Dean wasn't.
Whenever Dean offered to come went him, Sam would come up with some reason on why Dean needed to go somewhere else or do something else.
When Dean found jobs for them to do, to take their minds off of the coming of the Apocalypse, Sam would say that they really needed to focus on finding a way to stop Lucifer, to find the Horsemen.
Dean just wanted to know what was different about Gabriel's death that was getting to his little brother so much, because frankly, it was starting to piss him off that Sam wasn't talking to him about it.
It had been two weeks now and today was no different. Dean currently sat in the motel room at the table, watching television with a beer in his hand. Sam was already gone by the time he woke up, leaving only a note saying, Gone to do some research, will be back soon. He didn't even say where he was going and when Dean tried to call Sam's phone, it went straight to voicemail. He would have look up the GPS on the phone but he didn't feel like fighting with Sam about not trusting him anymore. So, instead he went and got some breakfast and came back to the room.
He was flipping through the channels, looking for something to watch, even though he knew there was nothing on at the moment. He stopped on the news, they were reporting about the some break in at a mall somewhere. He just shook his head, there was an Apocalypse coming and they were talking about a teenager acting out against his parents.
"I believe it would be better if only a few knew about the coming battle."
Dean nearly jumped, he hadn't heard the sounds of wings that normally single Castiel showing up. "Dude! I've told you not to do that!"
"I'm sorry Dean, but you seemed to be very focus on the show, I didn't want to bother you."
"So you just decide to read my mind?"
"I do not read mind Dean," Castiel said moving around the table to the other chair.
"Oh, really? Why are you here then?"
"I felt that you were concerned about something," Castiel said.
"You felt?" Castiel opened his mouth to answer but Dean knew that he either wouldn't like the answer, would get more confused, or get just plain creep out. "Never mind," he said holding his hand up, "forget I asked." Castiel nodded, taking the seat, he folded his hands on the table and just stared at Dean. The awkward silence was getting to Dean so he broke the ice, "Yes, okay, if you need to know, I am worried about someone, Sam." He took a sip from his beer, "He's been acting wired lately and it's starting to get to me."
"I'm sure the death of Gabriel isn't the caused of Sam actions."
"I thought you didn't read mind?"
"I only look at the facts Dean."
Dean grinned. "And what are the facts telling you?"
"That Sam has been doing more research than normal and that you believe his actions are caused for concerns. Also, you believe that Gabriel's death has something to do with it."
"Well what else would it be? He started acting this way after Gabriel went and died on us. I don't know why though, the guy was a jerk, and a big one."
"Have you talked to Sam?"
Dean just stared at Castiel, wondering how he could ask that. Dean still didn't get the angel, there were days when Castiel seemed to know everything about him and then there were times when he knew nothing at all. "Yes, Cass, I tried talking to him but he didn't want to talk back." Taking another sip, "Sometimes I feel like he's keeping secrets from me again." Dean hated to admit it but he had even thought that maybe Sam was back on the whole demon blood thing again, not that he would ask Sam that straight to his face.
He grinned as a random memory from his high school years came to mind, Their father had dropped him off to do some research at the local library while he went to interview the cops, but instead Dean had ran off to hang with some of the girls from school that were throwing a party.
He looked to Castiel, "Did you do that?"
"Do what?" Castiel's eyes took on a slight brightness that Dean has only seen once in awhile, when the angel was up to something. Castiel's face may not give any emotions away but his eyes could tell a whole story; if you knew how to listen.
Dean looked at the now empty bottle in his hand. He knew Sam had been the kind of kid that their parents could trust. In other words, when he said he were going to the library to do schoolwork, he was going to the library; unlike Dean had been. Now through, after everything that they've been through, Dean wasn't sure if Sam was still that kind of kid. It had never jumped into his mind that Sam might had been running off somewhere to do something beside research. That even though that was what Sam said he was doing, didn't mean that was what he was doing.
"You think I should follow him?" he asked Castiel, who was now looking out the window.
Not looking to Dean, "I believe you should do what you believe is right." He turned to Dean, titling his head to the side, "If you believe that that is to follow him, then…"
"Yes or no Cass? Should I follow him or not?" Castiel only stared at him and when Dean realized that he wasn't going to answered, he nodded, "Alright, I'll find out where he's going tomorrow. Right now though," he said standing, moving to grab his jacket and the keys to the Impala, "since I don't know where to even start looking for him. Why don't you and I go get some more beer, and maybe some pie?"
