Things on my Dock that didn't come with it: Firefox, Scrivener, and Office.

I already have an external hard drive that's quite sufficient for Time Machine (3/4 of a terabyte). i haven't installed Skype yet, because iChat's vidconferencing has been mostly sufficient for me thus far.

Online video - probably not; I really suck at watching anything these days XD But I'll keep that in mind if I ever seem likely to!

*smooch* Email on its way, love.

Just a stranger who saw this post on someone's friends page, but I wanted to recommend the open source program QuickSilver, which you can read about here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicksilver_%28software%29

I've found it hugely useful on my MacBook, personally, and it's become one of my 'Can't-Live-Without' programs of late. It may or may be of use to you though, depending on if you're fine with learning to use the keyboard to launch programs and perform other activities through one front-end.

I believe it can be downloaded from here : http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/downloads/list

Hope this helps! :)

I prefer Adium to iChat for regular IM chatting, although it doesn't support video chat as far as I can tell. I can't remember why I switched anymore, but I'm very happy with it ( ... )

Ah. I do have a few Firefox plug-ins I'm pretty reliant on, so I will probably stick with Firefox (plus the option to sync bookmarks between desktop & laptop, across OSs).

It'll take me a little while to have a decent opinion formed on Scrivener. First glance suggests that I'm going to prefer LSB, but first glances have been wrong before. XD (synecdochic had a post a while back about how she uses Scrivener for editing, which you might find educational. I can dig up a link if you don't see it.)

Thank you!

What's LSB? I'm not familiar with it, and Google failed me.

I'll have to look for the synecdochic post, thanks!

LSB is Liquid Story Binder, which is a piece of writing/planning/researching software whose features I mostly only use AFTER the damn thing is written XD But I love it, and the mailing list (while occasionally full of epic entitled morons) is really helpful, and the programmer is VERY responsive to comments and feedback. We get a new version, on average, every 1-3 months (and upgrading is free.)

DropBox for file syncing between your computers.

1Password for saving your passwords, generating strong passwords, autofilling forms, saving serial numbers, etc.

Perian from perian.org -- it adds a bajillion codecs so Quicktime and other quicktime-based apps [like Front Row] can open nearly any type of media under the sun.

TextWrangler, as previously mentioned.

Cyberduck for FTP.

I'm using Google Chrome (technically the Chromium daily build) for most browsing now.

Adium for IMing; Skype for some voice and video calls, iChat for others.

MarsEdit for blogging.

NetNewsWire for RSS reading.

Thank you! Currently I use GoogleReader for my RSS, and the Dreamwidth entry screen for my blogging, but the others are definitely on my list!

Ummmm. I really like iTunes, but I tend to be a conformist like that :( I also liked the simple interface of iMovie for things like movie editing, as opposed to getting a bigger program. I'm not sure if you have any need for that, though.

Well, those come with it. ;) Thanks for the input though!
