ahhhh, gymnastics, I love you. ♥ Although I am really stompy about Nastia getting silver in the bars; I think she deserved the gold. Also am still convinced that no matter what documentation the PRC gave to the IOC, half or more of the Chinese women's team is very underage ( Read more... )

Well, in my way, I will probably pop up, pull some stuff out of a box, fidget it into place, return to snuggle, then go be OCD about the bookshelves, snuggle more, etc. It is this unfocused approach that causes me not to be done!

Well, because the ten-year-olds are smaller and lighter, they are less likely to go out of bounds on floor, they do release skills more easily on bars, and because they have neither hips, breasts, nor butts, they have less to worry about on a balance beam (also their center of gravity is lower, proportionally.) So basically they get a whole bunch of advantages competing against the older girls - which is one reason why the IOC raised the minimum competition age, to help stop some of the really unhealthy abuses being employed in gymnastics.

I'm still offended by it, though.

Yes, 16 is the minimum age.

Yeah, but they do the same thing in track if someone goes before the starting gun - false starts disqualify you. It makes sense there, at least. And in gymnastics, the reason they do it is because the green light means all the judges are ready and paying attention - you could get an unfair bonus if you went beforetime and they missed an error.

Uh, no, I am not a total gymnastics nerd, what would ever make you think that? >_>;

The sad part is that since the IOC relies on passports alone to determine age, it's really easy for the Chinese state team to fake their ages and meet the IOC qualifications. Ergo, case closed. Sucks, but that's life in a dictatorship.

yep. I mean, how do you verify age? government-issued documentation. Who's issuing it? The government that wants to prove that they are totally more awesome than us. Yep. There you go.
