This was the new staging, then? The thing they do for Javert's suicide (which is maybe my girlfriend's favourite moment of the show and possibly her favourite moment in fiction) is sort of ridiculously elaborate, don't you think?

It was ridiculously elaborate, but it was damned cool. I was staring at it totally distracted from the moment by being like BUT WAIT WHAT DID HE ATTACH HIMSELF TO.

A friend of Angela's crewed the show when it came through Portland. Apparently there's this long arm directly upstage of him, which he has to discreetly mount himself to while performing and then the set flies away from him and the arm just moves backwards, so he recedes suspended in mid-air.
