Something tingled at the base of his skull, and the tingle spread over his body. It felt vaguely like the Scan magic that Rosa wielded, but where hers was a gentle exploration, this was a swiftly comprehensive look that spared no niceties of feeling or modesty.
"Well, the damage is not all that bad," the shadow said grudgingly. "Certainly nothing that cannot be mended."
Impulse seized his tongue before rationality could override it. "I was not aware the dead were prone to mending."
The way the shadow chuckled, deeper even than King Odin's voice and rumbling like rocks down a mountainside, sent an icy chill skittering down his spine. "The dead typically are not," the shadow said, "but you are not yet dead-though such a thing could be arranged if it is truly your desire. Far be it from me to dictate your wishes."

Below her, in the main square, carpenters hammered frantically to finish the seating and stalls for the upcoming celebration. I Want To Be Your Canary, Garnet's favourite play, would be performed for her birthday celebration, as it was every year.
Garnet paused, her eyes suddenly narrowing. The theatre company would come in on an airship. If she could convince them to let her stow away...no. No. She would ask them to kidnap her.
She couldn't help but giggle. The victim of a kidnapping asking to be kidnapped? What a reversal.
