SSRL Reclist

I'm working my way through a fanfic archive which, much like FFnet, has lovely works mixed in with the rubbish. Unlike FFnet, it's a bit annoying to find anything on it. So here are a few gems I've run into so far - I'll include a few from other sites, too, if the opportunity presents itself. I'll also be updating this list as I find things.

Good Long Fic

Weight of Memory by Carfiniel - 224k words, summary says "One is a murderer, the other is a spy. But when dire circumstances force them to turn to each other, can Remus and Severus overcome their history enough to work together?" but the story itself is surprisingly free of action, which I enjoyed, and the story is a lot better than it sounds. It's a beautiful piece, a lot about trust, and fills in Deathly Hallows very nicely (as that's about where it starts and where it ends, though it ditches canon in some truly lovely ways).

Smoke Instead of Sunlight by MusIgneus - 204k words, summary says "Actions can have unintended consequences, and not everyone is what they seem." Has descriptive noncon in it (description says "dubcon/forced consent", but it is absolutely noncon, no two ways about it, and it's not the type that might arouse us masochistic little things), but it lightens up a lot after that.
The summary is horribly non-descriptive, so I'll give you mine - it's about the events leading up to the Dark Lord's demise, after Snape killed Dumbledore. It starts out about the dangers of unintended consequences, but becomes a very elegant work about the trials of spying for the Dark Lord. It's dark, but not so bleak as to be any sort of proper angst, and it is never and always romantic. A fine story, in all.

Stone Walls by Arionrhod - 39k words, summary is "A defiant Remus rescues Severus from Azkaban, intending to offer him freedom in exchange for a service, and finds out that there are far more confining prisons than those with bars and walls." This fic is beautiful, and long, and it takes its time with every step, but that just makes it all the more satisfying when you reach the end of it. It's a story about recovery, and it's peaceful and quiet and romantic and absolutely gorgeous.

Amazing Shorts

Occlumency 301 by ms_jvh_shuh - 5k words, summary is "No matter how hard you try, you can never guess another person's deepest secret.", but it's much more absolutely fucking hysterical than serious (it's not crack at all, but it's very funny). As well as being SSRL, this is Draco/Neville, which is a fabulous pairing that all must worship, so it's just that little bit more awesome in my eyes, but it doesn't need it. It's amazing. And hilarious.

Carthage by Schemingreader - 7k words, summary goes "After the war, Severus Snape has been exonerated, but still feels guilty and horrible. When an injured Remus Lupin appears on his doorstep, he does his duty and takes care of him." The summary is pretty clear - it's a quiet, medium-length fic set in Severus's home, with only the two of them involved. Very nice for a rainy day.

Let's Give Them Something To Talk About by JayKay - ? words (maybe two pages long?), summary is "Humour-fic--Dumbledore talks to Snape about appropriate behaviour in public..." - it's very amusing, and well worth such a short read. I was sent off giggling quite enthusiastically throughout it.

I Kiss Your Cup by Marlene - 1.6k words, summary is just "Snape's obsession..." This is an amazing goddamn piece of writing. There are no words for how elegant, how beautiful, how subtle and calm and enthralling this is. I love it to pieces and enthusiastically recommend it to anyone with at all of a fondness for angst.

Extra:

In Clothes a Wantonness by hecuba_oppentop , 18k words, NC17, "When the Ministry refuse to believe he acted as a spy during the war, Remus Lupin is forced into hiding, choosing to spend his exile performing in a Muggle drag club while he searches for the one person who can provide evidence of his innocence: Severus Snape."
