I think I pronounce "aunt" and "direction" differently from you, so ... there's that.

Also every time you said "Star Driver" I thought you were going to say "Star Trek." ... orz

I pronounce "aunt" and "direction" differently if I'm speaking fast, but I don't think I've ever pronounced the other two differently before! And sometimes I don't even really notice words being pronounced differently unless it's pointed out to me.

XD That really shouldn't have made me giggle as much as it did.

Yeah, pronunciation can be weird. Apparently I say "room" funny and no one told me this until I got to college.

I am a sad, pathetic fangirl. XD

As far as I know, the major differences are:

roof: short u or "oo" blend.
aunt: "ohnt" or "ant"
direction: die-REK-shun or der-EK-shun. This is the only one I differ from you on!
naturally: I think this is a difference in if the "u" is voiced.

There are probably a million small linguistic differences though.

Do they not have a strong Southern accent in Louisiana? :O

Also, your voice is really Asian. ♥

Ooo, thanks for explaining it all! There's a strong Cajun accent where I'm from, and I had to work very hard to get rid of it, ahahah.

!! Thank you for recognizing that I have a really Asian voice! I was trying to explain this to my roommate, who couldn't really tell. XD Maybe it's an Asian thing.

I think it's something people pick up on after hearing many Asians talk and many non-Asians talk. There's this Latino dude from Berkeley who remarked that my voice is really Asian, so I know it is not just a thing that Asians can tell apart!

Incidentally, about your other thread: everyone mixes up pronunciations when they talk quickly. The linguistics professor who led my humanities class's discussion section discussed how "bitch" and "beach" can sound indistinguishable when taken out of context, but this is never a problem because our brains are astute context-grabbers!

Unless you want to talk about how you took a girl surfing last weekend and boy you're never going to that b??ch again.

Ah, point. I grew up in place without many Asians, and I don't think my roommate has heard enough to distinguish.

I always I ought to be more interested in linguistics, but beyond a surface interest, I can't seem to find any enthusiasm for the subject. That factoid is interesting, though! And it's good to know I'm not the only one who mixes up pronunciations.

That was fun. I'd do it if I had a way to record myself and didn't cringe at the sound of my own voice. I am a linguistics nerd x_x.
