Where has the funk been all my life?

I'm doing research for my french presentation on the history of disco music and I'm finding that music history is very, very convoluted, but lots of fun nonetheless ( Read more... )

Funk? Silly? No. No never.

I gotta say, without the funk we might not have gotten the supreme awesomeness that is Primus.

I did a history of rock paper for my Apocalypticism in Medieval Art class (confused yet?) and so I got to study up on the blues! It was also one of the best projects ever! :)

Hahah... awesome! Truly awesome. Or funky... I should say funky, shouldn't I? Or funkadelic.

Wow! Where has Primus been all my life? That was delightful.

I think I can kind of see connections between apocalyptic art and rock music.. but I would be interested to learn more. Yes?

Are you not familiar with Primus? Boy are you in for a treat! Les Claypool is a bass magician. Here's another favorite:

We had to choose some modern thing that depicts apocalypticism in the same way that the medieval folks did with their art. Well I suggested that rock music was apocalyptic, interested in the end, and evil women and all that, and that this interest sprang more from the blues than any religious leaning. The blues was quite apocalyptic. A big chunk of my paper was dedicated to the song "In My Time of Dying", which has an interesting history!

And because I'm an annoying bastard, here's Zeppelin's hip-griding, guitar-molesting version! (I apologize if you're already familiar!)

When you said "bass magician" you weren't exaggerating. That was some of the finest basswork I have ever heard. Where has Primus been all my life.

Interesting! Was the blues more connected to religious learning, or did the apocalyptic themes come from somewhere else?

Music history is so cool! :D

Hahaha... Now that I think of it, it's probably a good half of my music collection too. The half that isn't wholesome 60's pop music.

Discovery is lots of fun! :D

I've been listening to this, trying to analyze it, break it down.. pick out the funk elements, but I KEEP GETTING DISTRACTED BY THE COSTUMES.

P.S. I can't begin to describe how much I love your icon.

We should start a funk revival. And YES the last one. Heh.. when I first stumbled upon it, I spent ages trying to figure out why it sounded so familiar. :P

Hahah... I do that more often than I would like to admit. :P

Wholesome 60's pop makes me so happy. Everything is so upbeat and innocent. :) I haven't seen The Boat That Rocked (well.. they call it Pirate Radio here. I don't know why) I really wanted to when it came out, but then I didn't. :(
