I was walking home with my then-girlfriend in Raleigh, NC one night about 3 am. On the main street, right across from NCSU's campus, in the Bruegger's Bagels parking lot, there was a Great Horned Owl sitting on top of the streetsign. We walked by, very carefully, about 20 feet from him.

hehe well, I must confess, it was mostly at the b/f's insistence. I was glad, however, when we went back with the Wildlife Rescue folks; the bird was in much worse shape that I had thought.
