Death was no stranger to Gene, it may have constantly passed him by, but it took numerous friends and lovers. He lost more and more people with each year, a haunting cloud of mourning over days such as this; he could not celebrate another marked year of his life when he thought of all he’d lost.

One thing I do love about the Babe and Roe dynamic, even from the perspective of friends and fellow soldiers in BoB, is that Babe is the one who makes Roe, like, stop. And confront his faults. And break from whatever state of mind he's in. Basically, Babe helps Roe from being too much of a driven, one-track-minded mopey bastard when Roe is stuck in that sort of head space.

I like to think of Babe having a lot of layers going on; he's not just a kid with street smarts, and I can see him digging some classic literature.
