Reading this makes me sad that I never got into GK as much as I did BoB/TP. I love your Ray-Ray voice. I like how it comes through the narration as clearly as it does the epic one liners.

He didn’t have the chance since somewhere between O’Dark Hundred and Dawn, Ray curled up like a little kid next to Walt’s side. He only woke up when the shadow of the Iceman fell over them ( ... )

Trying to write Gen Kill fic has made me realize I can pretty much only write it in Ray-Ray voice. I can give Poke dialogue, but I cannot write his narration pov.

The bit you quoted was pretty much my favorite in the writing.

Re: Nate/Brad, I can see it, but not in-theater and not while they're both in the military. You can see it in both their characters that they respect the Officer/NCO line, and they don't cross it. In fact, many of the episodes show just how far Nate WON'T cross that line, so when I see fic that ignores that, it actually really bothers me.

Granted, for me outside of Ray/Walt, Gen Kill is ALL about the epic bromance.

Yeah. In my very short GK writing career, I could really only manage Ray-Ray and Brad... but only if he was interacting with Ray, lol. In short: Ray makes things easier.

You can see it in both their characters that they respect the Officer/NCO line, and they don't cross it.

Thank you for putting this in words! That's the real big thing that was 'off' for me when explored in fic. And, honestly, I, personally, see more chemistry with Brad and Ray (if because there is no line?)

:D

I love Ray and Brad's chemistry, but for me it's so very old married couple/bros-that-are-pretty-much married. I love the two of them together but I can't, like, romatically ship them, if that makes sense? But really, there is no Officer/NCO line with them, now there is the fact Brad in Gen Kill is a SSgt and Ray's only a Cpl, but Ray clearly doesn't care about rank. I don't know, for me, Ray/Brad is kind of like Winters/Nixon, the canon pretty much gave me all the amazing things I want and they feel complete to me.

As I said one of my biggest pet peeves in all military fandoms is the crossing of that divide, esp when it's obviously something really important to a character. Oddly enough, it's also why I yearn for a Hillbilly, Stone and Lip AU fic talking about being on both sides of that divide.

So adorable. I think hinting at the facetious Ray/Brad was pretty glorious, first off. I love that Ray has a Lisa Frank trapper keeper crush on Walt. That description alone is worth lots of monies. I love that this gave more breadth to the cook stove incident and included the reactions of others - Rudy, Poke, Chaffin. That was like sprinkles on a sundae to be honest.

Gunny Wynn's reaction to the shower slip - AHAHA.

I really love anything Ray/Walt or you know, anything that makes legit sense character-wise.

Thank you! I don't often (okay, ever) write Gen. Kill fic but I pretty much adore Ray/Walt as a pairing, and Ray/Brad as a work marriage.

The cook stove incident always intrigued me and cracked me up b/c, seriously, the everyone is there when Brad comes in. I just wanted to flesh out that scene a bit more.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you again!

my favorite part of this fic is the voice--you make the narration sound like ray without going overboard or trying too hard. everything just comes naturally and you pick just the right things to focus on. love it. :D

It was my first time writing Ray as the main character and his voice is so very unique that I was worried about going way overboard with it. I'm glad it's not too much and you enjoyed it, bb!
