Yeah, that kinda irritates me a lot. Anne McCaffrey, one of my favorite authors, is the BIG one who doesn't want people writing fanfics. Like, even just a story based on the world she created, using none of her characters. The only place you can write fanfiction based on her work is on HER website, so she can monitor it. That really bothers me.
I don't understand it, personally. I think that if I could create a world that inspired someone to write, I would be happy with that. Even if they wrote utter crap, it's making people write instead of watch TV or something. *shrugs* It's stupid. Do you see JK Rowling getting overly pissed at this shit? And I mean, people write Harry/Draco slash all the time. And she doesn't care. *sigh*
(Someone told me Rowling even encourages Sirius/Remus...)
I dunno, it's a hard question. I get so into my writing and especially my characters I think if I read fanfiction of my stuff...it would be a royal headfuck. But then again, I wouldn't want to stop them doing it...free thinking/speech and all that. I guess I'd be really flattered, but would probably avoid actually reading stuff.
