Droolings of a deranged fangirl

I am a rabid lover of costume dramas. It is official. I am a particular fan of costume dramas set in the early-mid nineteenth century, and late eighteenth century.

Last night, quite randomly, I remembered how TERRIFICALLY AWESOME the Hornblower series was.  I could insert quite a lot of drooling about naval uniforms here, but I won't. I'll just ( Read more... )

Horatio Hornblower a brave captain of the British Navy. A gentlemanm and a modern day (of the time) warrior. Had many adventures over the high seas. A lot of the stuff these days, (Star Trek's Captain Kirk and Captain Picard come to mind) are loosly based on the series. I have only seen some of the episodes (I couldn't tell you the actor's name or if it's the same ones you saw) on the A&E cable channel a couple of years ago, but it was a good series. Never read the books though...

Fan boy/girlisms is a disease, I should know...my weakness was Claudia Christian on the Bablylon 5 series...

Hello, my name is Kyle and I am a fanboy...

Yeah, the A&E cable channel show is the same as the one over here. I think I may only be going to rabidly fangirl because it's a distraction from my dissertation and I might have reached my heights of fangirlism over 'North and South'...

I know what you're talking about, but that you've made one small error: the TV series is crap. Just about everything even vaguely technical to do with sailing is completely wrong, and while they may be "good actors" unfortunately they play themselves/whoever they want rather than the actual characters whose names they've been given. I'll lend you the books if you want, and you can learn just how mush less pleasant to everyone Mr. "happy smiley boy" Gruffudd *should* have been.

Ahh, I've never read the books, you see, and know nothing about sailing, so it all worked for me. I think my dad actually has the books at home, so I might well pick them up post-exams. It wouldn't surprise me that Hornblower was intended as a less pleasant character; in the TV series, I remember him as being depicted as pretty perfect.
