At the very least you're a friend that he's spent a significant amount of time with, and enjoys spending 1 day a week with.
Any move that would impact whether anyone could still hang out with their friends SHOULD bring up thoughts of their friends. So while yes, it might be an indication that he's looking for a more long-term/serious relationship than you are, it might also not be.
However, if he gets a job in Durham, I don't see any reason why you couldn't continue to see each other. True, gas is expensive, but I know people who commute between the two cities daily.
