Fic: Names & Near (OUaT)

Jan 21, 2012 19:25

I've had these thoughts the last few days. Thoughts about Ruby and Red Riding Hood and Wolf and the wolf. I saw some of the new pics for the show and read some of the spoilers and came up with these drabbles for a weekly challenge because I needed to get the words out.

I bring you my new story idea:

Title: Names
Prompt: CAMOUFLAGE
Word Count: 269
Rating: PG
Original/Fandom: Fandom - Once Upon a Time
Pairings (if any): Ruby/Wolf
Warnings (Non-Con/Dub-Con/RPF etc): While I can't prove anything, this might be considered a spoiler for upcoming episodes. This is just what I wish would happen. Nothing more.
Summary: She goes by many names.

It had been so long since she'd been called by her given name that she almost didn't remember it. Once, her mother and father had called her Dearest because that had been what she was. An only child to two people so deliriously in love that it had been hard to watch them sometimes as they sat before the fire, holding hands. That had been when there had been money for more than necessities, a solid roof over their heads, and happiness. Always happiness.

Her grandmother, her only living relative now, called her Sweetie even though she had passed the age when Sweetie was an acceptable moniker. Still, it felt comfortable to have someone around who loved her enough to call her something that reminded her of being a child again. Her life had long since been as carefree as it once was when her parents were alive. It was nice to have something from that time, even if it was only a frail old lady with a penchant for burning everything she tried to cook.

Everyone else knew her as Red Riding Hood. It had started as a title, something for the villagers to call her when they needed aid. Soon it became her identity. The cloak of her mother's that she'd found in the trunk in the corner of the shed became a rallying cry for anyone that found themselves oppressed or in genuine need. They said the words with reverence and awe. When someone called on Red Riding Hood for help, they got that help plus a little something extra. They got a shot of hope, as well.

Title: Near
Prompt: IN THE SHADOWS
Word Count: 346
Rating: PG
Original/Fandom: Fandom - Once Upon a Time
Pairings (if any): Ruby/Wolf
Warnings (Non-Con/Dub-Con/RPF etc): While I can't prove anything, this might be considered a spoiler for upcoming episodes. This is just what I wish would happen. Nothing more.
Summary: She always wants him near.

"What can a little girl do?" How many times had she heard the derisive tone clipping the words, from both male and female? As much as she wanted to prove her worth over and over again, she backed off if they didn't think she could help them. There needed to be faith. Faith that she could deliver on her promise. Faith that the rumors and stories were true. It was all she asked in payment for the help she provided.

She wasn't the only one who provided the help. Not by a long shot, but she was the only one that anyone was allowed to see. Everyone else was in the shadows, where they could do the most good. The band of ruffians she'd aligned with were all better left alone. They were all, to the man, angry and bitter and willing to do anything they could to get a few jabs at the person who caused their pain. The problem was that not a single one of them would have thought about helping anyone while they did it. Red and Wolf had combined them into a loose network of fighters that, most of the time, did what they were told.

For now, it worked. Such was the nature of the threats that came their way that a loose hold over the group was all that was needed. Wolf had known what he was doing when he'd come up with the idea in the first place. She hadn't believed him at first but she had people she needed to protect and Wolf was the perfect solution.

"You'll be able to watch over my grandmother better if you stay here."

"I can watch over her just as well from-"

But Red had been insistant, from the very beginning, that Wolf stay close. It was the only way that she'd work with him. At first. Soon it became less about making sure her grandmother was safe and more about the fact that being close to him made her get all quivery. She would have done anything to keep him close.
