There was nothing better than making two solid fists and taking that first swing. The adrenaline rush made her heart pound like nothing else did. Will hated getting his hands dirty in the middle of a fight but Kate didn’t mind. That was where she shown.

“Come on, Kate. Let’s just go. They’re a bunch of street thugs. It’s none of our business.”

Kate had already shed her jacket and handed it over to him. It was her best suede that would be a beast to clean if she got any blood on it. Besides, it would just get in the way if she really needed to lay someone flat.

“You wouldn’t be holding back if they were hurting an Abnormal,” she reasoned, “and this isn’t really any different. There’s a strong person trying to hurt a weak person. Doesn’t matter if they’re Abnormal or not. They need to be saved.”

“Like you need an excuse,” he muttered but didn’t say anything else about it as she headed into the fray.

It was like learning to fly, she reasoned as she began swinging at anyone that came in her path. At first she was tight and awkward and missed more than she landed but then there came the part of the fight where she felt like time had slowed down and everything was perfect. There was a finesse to each of her movements as muscle-memory kicked in.

When she stood over the big man at last, a cut over his eye gushing blood like a geyser, she smiled with great satisfaction as she gestured to the smaller boy he’d been attempting to overcome. “You really should pick your opponents better. He wasn’t giving you much of a workout.”

“Get off,” he muttered as he attempted to buck her away from his body.

“Oh, I will. Just wanted to here you say please.”

“I’m not-“ but her right fist silenced him.

“It’s please or I finish it and you get carried home to your girl so she can see what a big man you are.”

When he’d said it to her satisfaction, she got up and moved back to where Will was waiting with her coat and a grim expression. “You’ve got some blood on your cheek.”

There was a small cut there that was beginning to sting but she didn’t let on that it was affecting her at all. “You think they’ll let me into the movie with blood on my face?”

With a sigh, Will put his arm around her shoulders and she settled in beside him in the companionable way they had with each other lately. “If they don’t, you can hold my jacket and I’ll do the convincing.”
