The room was quiet as the single man stood in the middle of the stage, his guitar still reverberating from the last note he’d played. It was an unnerving silence, one that Oz had to deal with again and again. Every time he performed, there was that beatt after he was done and the audience realized the music was over. It was a moment he hated.

“Let’s hear it for the boy from out of town. That was just great.” The green-faced demon came up on stage, his orange suit blending with both his skin and his persona. Both were over the top. But then Oz liked to be unnoticed, preferring his music did the communicating for him. There was no way this guy was hiding anywhere. Not in that outfit.

Oz tried not to cringe as the demon turned to him, clapping him hard on the shoulder. “Thanks,” he replied weakly.

“You surprised me, Oz. I would have thought you’d sing Beg, Borrow or Steal instead. It’s one of your signature songs. Not that this one wasn’t just as good. Don’t get me wrong. I think you’ve got some real potential.”

“How do you know the title of my song?” Oz discovered that he couldn’t get a decent breath into his lungs. He felt like he was drowning. Normally he was as free as could be after he was done with a set but now every muscle in his body was tight. “No one knows about that song.”

“It could be big, Oz. Bigger than Mandy or Ramblin’ Rose. I wouldn’t lie about something like this.”

The demon’s soothing voice did nothing for Oz’s feeling of discomfort. Besides, he wasn’t so sure he wanted to be compared to Barry Manilow or Neil Diamond. Not that he was going to say anything about them to this thing… guy… better just stick with demon.

“Thanks,” he managed to squeak out once again.

“So… I take it you aren’t here to find out your destiny?”

Oz shook his head. “I just wanted to play some music while I was in town and a couple of my friends directed me here. Sorry, man. I like the here and now. No destiny reveals for me. Thanks anyway, man. Maybe next time I’m in town.”

The demon just shook his head, turning back to the audience. “And now we’re going to hear from Wahlbeck, the Pelth demon, singing It’s My Party . Let’s hope he doesn’t plan on doing any sort of crying. Those acidic tears could really play some havoc with our sound system. But here’s hoping for the best.”

Oz put his guitar back into the case as he tried to ignore the thick-skinned demon who had taken his place up on the stage. He didn’t care how cute Cordelia was. Just the fact that she had laughed after telling him about this place should have clued him in to what he was getting into. Maybe he’d better get back to Sunnydale where the demons got slayed before they ruined decent music.
