New Year Drabble: Unapologize (Twilight)

Dec 29, 2009 19:04

I have my New Years drabbles spread out over two computers and a flash drive that is never where I want it to be! I was kind of hoping to post these sort of together but that's not going to happen! Not if I want to get most of them posted before Valentine's Day!

Here's the first one. I hope you will forgive me for the COMPLETE lack of canon this drabble is. What can I say... I tried!

Title: Unapologize
Fandom: Twilight
Characters: Jacob/Bella
Word Count: 598
Prompt: moondance
For elle_blessing who asked for one of my New Year drabbles

There is plenty of time but Bella worries that something is going to go wrong and she’ll miss her only opportunity this turn to see Jacob. It has been fifty cycles of the moon since she became a vampire. Time, as she knew it as a human, has stopped. For the others, they look back on memories to help keep them in synch with time. Bella has learned to watch the moon’s phases. It’s something Jacob taught her. Something that is theirs alone.

She thought it would be hard to give up her friend when he showed signs of imprinting with her daughter. For their sake, she would have walked away, leaving her feelings for the sands of time to cover over. But Renesmee isn’t what anyone would call… normal. It has been apparent for years that she doesn’t utilize her feelings like other people do. She loves Jacob… just as she loves everyone else. There is no more or no less for anyone in her life. It is simply the way that she is. She gives no apology for being different.

So there is only Edward to contend with over her outings with the wolves. He lets her go only because he doesn’t want to sound petty any longer, telling her she can’t do something when the one hundred years before Bella came into his life stretch out behind him. Besides, there are things that the wolves can’t give her. Not even this strange mixture of love and friendship that she has for Jacob. She needs Edward like she needs to feed. He sustains her and keeps her from fragmenting into the nothingness she has always dreamed would happen to her without him.

But Jacob lights up her heart, making it whole in ways that Edward never can. With both of them, she is complete. It is this thought that puts a spring in her step today as she eagerly awaits the setting of the sun more so than any other time during the last 28 days.

Tonight is the moondance. For a moment of time, when the moon reaches it’s apex, the wolf will become human and the human will become wolf. The two portions of Jacob will linger together in one form until the moon begins to fall back down to earth. Then, until dawn, the wolves dance. Not a tango or a tired two-step but an energetic racing through the forest, back and forth and back and forth and back and forth until the first rays of sunlight remind them of their split selves. Beast or man. It is always a choice.

While she’s seen it before, she was always a spectator. Tonight she will be part of the dance. There will be no split to her personality but she can dance to her heart’s content. Jacob has asked her to be there tonight because he is alone. The rest of the pack, except for Leah who has never participated in a moondance that Bella has known about, have been called away and he is the only one. Tonight will be their special time together.

Edward would not understand if she tried to explain so she won’t. Nor will she unapologize for the excitement she has already expended at the cost to her family. These moments are fleeting. No matter that she will live to see a thousand moons rise up into the sky, she may never have this opportunity again.

It is right and it is true. Her love for Edward is the pure fire of forever but her love for Jacob is the sunkissed here and now. She’ll take what she can get.
