Hayden Grand Prix Show

I have never been so aware of my calf muscles in my life. Saturday was a slight form of torture as I walked up and down stairs, put up artwork, took down artwork, and then tore down all of the displays for the Children's Art Workshop show. It was the last Saturday for this year that I will spend six hours up at ASU, hurra! I'll miss the kids and teaching, but it'll be nice to have my Saturdays back.

So Friday! Friday was the day of the performance. It started out with me dropping off the majority of my stuff at my older brother's house as he agreed to help me get everything up to school. I then caught the bus, all dressed up in breeches, half-chaps, boots, polo shirt, and helmet. There was some brief awkwardness, but I shook it off and just went about my day, after all, it wasn't the first time I'd wandered about in breeches, neither was it the first time I'd gone to school wearing them, granted it was the first time at ASU, but that's okay, I survived.

During my Art Ed class I put up the displays mentioned earlier before having to leave to meet Tye and set up for the performance.

The set-up went rather smoothly. Tye had to go park the car so it didn't go quite as quickly as I would have liked and the arena wasn't quite straight, but that's okay, it worked. There were some people hanging around working on homework, eating lunch, and some wandering from class to class. One guy commented about someone having stolen my horse, and I laughed. Tye arrived with the tripod and one of the chairs (I carried everything else) and I finished setting up. At some point Nic, from my class showed up and as the time neared for the performance Mrs. Serwint appeared, which was just plain awesome of her. She's the one that initially signed off on it and got the process going for me to be able to do the performance.

To begin I stood in the middle of the ring and shouted out to anyone within hearing, welcoming them to the show and asking for volunteers. I had just the right amount: three. The judges consisted of my brother, Nic, and Mrs. Serwint. I then explained a bit about Dressage and its purpose before starting the music and performing the piece.

I think nerves played a slight part in the amount of energy it took to do the piece, I was a bit breathless after it, but I also improvised some circles when I made the mark too soon before gait and movement changes. Apparently my stride length is much larger than 1/3 of a horse's, so had I it to do over again I might make the arena a bit bigger.

Now part of me wants to get a group of people together and have an honest-to-goodness SHOW with multiple entries that spreads over several hours rather than just a few minutes. And fliers and advertising. It would be awesome. The other part of me says "I draw, I'm not a performance artist." But the idea strikes me as entertaining just the same.

Once I get it edited and such to my liking I'll post it up on YouTube. It must be shared!

Today I should finish up the video and will also e-mail the show results to the Judges. I also want to create Thank You cards for the three of them and perhaps give each a DVD of the performance. I'll probably do the same for Joel, he tried to make it, but he arrived not long after I finished taking everything down. He was in the Art Ed class with me and would have been there had he been able (I would have had the performance after class had I been able!).

I'm rather happy with it overall. It would have been nice to have more people show up, but I had the right amount and will be content with that.

Now I just need to figure out what to do for my final project ...

And I'm still a little sore from it, but I'll survive.
